One of the must-visit places in the United States is the White Sands National Park. It is a place that will leave you in awe, regardless of how high your expectations were, as it showcases the barrenness of human imagination.
🌈Regarding the trail:
This park is like a road that stretches into the distance. If you have plenty of time, start from the entrance and explore each point along the way. If time is limited or you prefer convenience, head straight to the Alkali Flat Trailhead. The most breathtaking views of the entire park can be found along the Alkali Flat trail. It is a must to venture inside, not necessarily completing the entire trail, but at least walking to the closest area where there are no sand dunes. It only takes a maximum of 20 minutes. Definitely avoid the Sunset Stroll trail.
🌈Regarding the season and time:
Any season except for summer is suitable. Remember to check the weather and beware of heatstroke. It is best to start in the afternoon (a world of pure white), and as dusk approaches, the world turns pink. After the sun sets, there will be one or two hours of a purple world. Be cautious of getting lost on the trail after it gets dark. If you tend to lose your way, it's better to walk back before sunset. Additionally, this area is close to a missile base, so it's advisable to check the official website of the national park before visiting. The park may partially close during missile launches.
🌈Regarding photography:
A telephoto lens is a must, with 70mm as the base. The best angle should be at least one sand dune away. As for equipment, bring sunscreen, sunglasses (essential), sufficient water, and shoes suitable for walking on sandy terrain (you can also go barefoot, but there is a slight chance of encountering insects or snakes; the sand is very fine and hardly causes discomfort). It gets very cold after dark.
🌈Regarding sand sliding:
In my personal opinion, if you don't have children, sand sliding here is a bit of a waste. It's better to focus on taking photos and enjoying the scenery. The boards at the nearby Walmart are cheaper than those at the visitor center in the park, but you have to buy wax and apply it yourself, and it's uncertain if it works or not. The sand dunes along the park's roadside are low and flat, so it's quite a climb to slide down a bit.
🌈Regarding transportation:
There aren't many airports nearby, and the closest one is El Paso, but flights are limited. Many people choose to fly to Albuquerque instead.
‼️For those who come here, it is highly recommended to also visit the nearby Carlsbad Caverns National Park. It may require an extra day, but it is definitely worth it!
